The tips and tricks here are meant with spam and abuse in mind; this is not a guide on using Matrix clients such as Element. If you need support for a client ask in its support room.
Check your settings
Join rules
Verify your room’s access settings: Public, Invite-only, Knock, or Space-limited.
Permissions
Check the permissions inside your room:
- Who can send invites? Some people will send spam invites to your room to harm its reputation.
- Who can notify everyone? People might try to annoy others by sending a message with "@room".
Dont lose control
Setup backup accounts
By creating backup accounts on other Matrix servers you can still access and manage your rooms—even if your usual server goes down.
After joining with your backup account(s) make sure to give them enough permissions in your room.
Dont be the only Admin / Moderator
Ask others to help
This can be tricky, especially in the beginning, when your community is still small. But as your room grows you should consider promoting trusted members of your community to moderator or administrator.
This has two advantages: first is the availability of active moderation increases. Second, if you lose interest in your community or Matrix altogether the rooms you created don't become 'zombies'.
